What does AYSO stand for?
American Youth Soccer Organization. Founded in California in 1964.
Based upon five basic principles: Everyone plays; Balanced Teams;
Open Registration; Good Sportsmanship; and Positive Coaching.
Today there are over 650,000 players and 50,000 teams nationally.
Do I have to volunteer?
AYSO is an all-volunteer organization. Volunteering in some way, big or
small, will only enhance the positive experience your child can have.
Why can't I be guaranteed the same coach as last season?
First of all, one of AYSO's philosophies is to provide balanced teams.
A team that has played together before and has had the same coach would
begin with an unfair advantage and therefore not be balanced.
Also, changing coaches and players is not a bad thing. New friends
can be made and more positive experiences can be had.
Why can't you arrange for my child and her friend to be on the same team?
We definitely try to keep siblings in the same division on the same team
for the benefit of their parents, however aside from that, the concept
of balancing our teams may or may not allow "friends" to be on the
same team. Again, the opportunity to make new friends is there.
What does my registration fee pay for?
Registration pays for a uniform consisting of jersey, shorts and socks,
soccer accident insurance, and a photo package. A portion of your
registration fee goes to the national program and the remainder is
used for region expenses such as goals, paint for the fields, first
goal pins, newsletters and volunteer training.
When does the season start and end?
Games will begin on September 4th and end on October 30th. Practices
may not start until after August 1st.
What time does my child practice?
The times are up to the coach. Practices are usually held in the late
afternoons during the week or on weekends. And, the duration of
practices per division are set in the regional guidelines.
What day does my child practice?
The days are up to the coach. Again, the amount of practices per week
per division are set in the regional guidelines.
Where are practices held?
Practices are held at Ali'i Beach Park, Haleiwa Beach Park and Sunset Beach Park.
(locations are subject to change)
Where are the games?
U5 & U6: at Kaiaka Park
U8, U10, U14 & U16/19: at Haleiwa Beach Park
U12: at Sunset
(locations are subject to change)
What time are my child's games?
Games usually begin at 8:00am and the last game can begin as late as 3:00pm.
When will I find out what team my child is on?
Typically you'll find out by the end of July.
Players on teams with a COMPLETE Coaching crew, will receive
notice from the coach after coaches receive their team packets towards the end of July.
Teams without an adequate coaching crew will be delayed.
What if I don't hear from anyone?
Don't panic coaches sometimes need time to coordinate their schedules
before contacting everyone, but to feel free to contact us at 808-637-7800.
It is up to each coach to contact all the players and their parents on
their team.
What else do I need to buy?
To be ready for practice and for the games, you will need to have either
soccer or tennis shoes (baseball and football cleats are NOT allowed),
shin guards (with ankle protection desired), practice socks, an
appropriate size ball (per your division), and a water bottle.
What does Region 289 mean?
Our region consists of North Shore Communities of Waialua, Haleiwa,
and Sunset Beach. 289 is the number given to our region to identify
us from all of the other regions nationally.
Why don't you hire or pay the referees?
Referees, like all other participants, such as coaches and
administrators, are volunteers. Hiring staff would drastically increase
our registration fees.
Can my child be a referee?
Yes! We have a number of youth referees. If your child is 10 or older
we encourage them to take one of our referee classes and help
referee games. Call Boyd at 638-8462 to schedule the training.
When do we get our uniforms?
Uniforms usually arrive in August and are distributed to coaches, who
then distribute them to the team prior to our Opening Day. Late
registration may result in uniforms arriving late, but every effort
is made to get uniforms to the teams prior to the first game.
Can we put our child's name on their uniform?
No, AYSO has asked that no identifying marks/logos be put on the
jersey that is provided to each child.
Can my child play up?
To "play up" means to play in an age division over what one's age
calls for. Our region strongly discourages such a practice, and then
by the approval of the Regional Commissioner only.
What is VIP?
Very Important Player. This is a special program for disadvantaged or
challenged youth. If you know of any VIP youth please contact our VIP
coordinator Faith Craycroft for more information at 381-2532.
